I would like to read about the lives of the 12 apostles, non biblical - historical preferably. I am looking at this christian thing again but nervous because I was convinced of the truth of the book of mormon in my youth, they said read it and pray and you will know the truth, scary when people tell me the same thing about the bible. I would like references to the validity of the bible before I start reading / studying it.
Thank you for your question. I would recommend the following books:
Paul Barnett, THE BIRTH OF CHRISTIANITY (The First Twenty Years); Eerdmans
Paul Barnett, PAUL: MISSIONARY OF JESUS; Eerdmans
Barnett is a world-class New Testament scholar AND
historian of the early church.
Walter Chantry, SIGNS OF THE APOSTLES; Banner of Truth
Chantry's book is very good at showing the men had to meet certain criteria to be counted as "apostles". Not everyone with a religious experience and grandiose claims was believed to be a true "apostle" sent by Jesus Christ.
These should get your started and lead you to other sources too. May the Lord of mercy have mercy on you and help you see the truth. Ask Him to undo whatever prejudices might be in your heart (we are all biased by indwelling sin to twist the Scriptures unless the grace of God working through the Holy Spirit overcomes it--Psalm 33: 1-2 and Romans 8:7; 1st Corinthians 2:14).
Your Book Servant,
Pastor Steve Martin
