Hello Pastor Steve,
I have been encountering some brethren whose consciences are in bondage to Bill Gothard's teaching on "generational sins", the idea that our forefathers ate sour apples and therefore our teeth are on edge. Can you recommend some books that give a sound interpretation of Exodus 20:5-6 and that deal with the falsehood of psychic determinism? Thank you for your important question. I recommend the following two commentaries for exegetical, interpretive help here.
Douglas Stuart, EXODUS (New American Commentary
Series); Broadman & Holman
Philip Ryken, EXODUS (Preach the Word Commentary
Series); Crossway
John Currid, EXODUS; Evangelical Press (2 volumes)
These should give you sufficient coverage by careful exegetes and biblical theologians.
