Hello Pastor Steve,
It was a delight and a joy for my family and I to worship the Lord together with you all yesterday morning at Heritage Church!
I need two book recommendations. An incarcerated young man that I know has recently professed faith in Christ, and the initial indications are very hopeful that he has truly entered into the narrow gate of conversion. As he begins walking on the difficult path of discipleship I would like to give him two books: one on how to have daily personal devotions and the other a simple introduction to what it means to walk in gospel obedience to the Ten Commandments. Preferably both books need to be simple and brief so as not to overwhelm this new babe in Christ. I look forward to your recommendations.
Your friend, Jerry
Jerry,
Thank you for your important question. I would recommend WALKING WITH GOD by J. C. Ryle. It is published by Grace Publications out of England and is a simplification and abridgment of PRACTICAL RELIGION.
Here are the Chapter headings:
1. Self-Examination
2. Effort
3. Reality
4. Prayer
5. Bible Reading
6. Love
7. Zeal
8. Happiness
9. Formality
10. The World
11. Wealth and Poverty
12. The Best Friend
13. Illness
14. The Family of God
15. Heirs of God
16. The Great Gathering
17. The Great Separation
18. Eternity
Appendix: The Lord's Day
What a simple, clear, straight-forward treatment of these fundamental subjects. It does not cover the Ten Commandments directly but I believe does cover biblical self-examination, etc.
Your Book Servant,
Pastor Steve Martin
