CRUCIFORM PRESS is a new publisher who has only been in existence for a couple of years. They have a clear vision to publish short, helpful, biblical and generally Reformed books on practical topics. I mentioned "short" as the first attribute of their books--well, they are all purposely under 100 pages. They are on subjects that make them most helpful. They are very biblical. And their authors are evangelical and Reformed.
These little powerhouse books would make good group studies, Sunday School classes, books to shove in your backpack before you leave for a weekend, books to read during spare time, and certainly books to purposely study and pray over.
Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service is beginning
its relationship with CRUCIFORM PRESS by carrying the following titles. Buy them and we will get more! Let me tell you some of the good things about the following titles.
Jerry Bridges, WHO AM I ?
Who in Reformed Christendom has not profited greatly from Jerry Bridges? I was leaving Keswick
influenced parachurch ministry when THE PURSUIT OF HOLINESS first came out and showed me a more sophisticated version of my own cobbled together doctrine of sanctification. Over the years a steady stream of great tiles have come from this man. His latest has to do with the believer's identity in Christ.
Jerry is a man who has worked through this issue himself and has good biblical thinking on this subject. Let me tease you with his chapter titles:
1. I AM A CREATURE
2. I AM IN CHRIST
3. I AM JUSTIFIED
4. I AM AN ADOPTED SON OF GOD
5. I AM A NEW CREATION
6. I AM A SAINT
7. I AM A SERVANT OF CHRIST
8. I AM NOT YET PERFECT
Try it; I believe you will really like it! (James Packer and R. C. Sproul said that they really like the book too!)
Joel Beeke, FRIENDS AND LOVERS
Joel Beeke has been a steady and hard-working contributor to the Reformed resurgence in the past 15 years. His books and conferences are a blessing to thousands. Here he helps us understand how to develop our friendship with our spouse and our love life. (Who said the Dutch Reformed were stodgy? This is no racy tell-all but a warm, spiritual, biblical presentation of growing in marital intimacy.)
Joel Beeke, GETTING BACK IN THE RACE (The Cure
for Backsliding)--a spiritual road map and a healing balm for the believer who has been away from Christ but who wants to come home to Christ again.
Brian Hedges, LICENSED TO KILL
Taking the title of a popular James Bond movie and applying it to the Christian life, Brian Hedges has done the 21st century church a real favor and taken John Owen's THE MORTIFICATION OF SIN and digested it and then regurgitated it in his own words in 21st century idiom. A good book for young Christians of all ages who want to deal seriously with their sinning.
Tim Challies, SEXUAL DETOX (A GUIDE FOR GUYS
WHO ARE SICK OF PORN)--too many Christian men are porn addicts. One recent sociological study on the effects of pornography had to be cancelled when they could not find participants who had NOT watched
porn! There was no one to compare with. There were no innocent "un-porned" guys as a baseline from which to compare with the "porned" guys. Challies book is good to help men detox from porn for good.
Casey Lute, BUT GOD... (THE TWO WORDS AT THE
HEART OF THE GOSPEL)--I like this book because it is true. As Paul reminds the Ephesian Christians of the grace of God in all of their lives (Paul and the Ephesians) in Chapter 2:1-4, Paul then transitions his readers to the saving grace of God by telling them: "But God...". And the unfolding riches of the saving grace of God in Christ are unfolded. One of the most memorable sermons preached in Great Britain in the 20th century was Martin Lloyd-Jones famous sermons:
But God..." Casey Lute knows the gospel and knows the human heart and he has great comforting news for sinners who know themselves to be sinners but wonder if there is grace for people like them.
May the Lord enrich your life as you avail yourself of these riches in Christ.
Your Book Servant,
Pastor Steve Martin
