The English Standard Version is an "essentially literal" translation that stands in the classic stream of Bible translations as exemplified by Tyndale's first translation of the Bible in English, the King James Version, and most recently the Revised Standard Version. With this legacy as the starting place, every word and phrase of the ESV was weighed against the original languages for the greatest accuracy and clarity.
