Edward Payson (1783-1827), Trinitarian Congregationalist, b. at Rindge, N.H.; graduated at Harvard; taught school for three years; pastor of the Congregational Church in Portland, Maine, from 1811 to 1827. “He was a man of exalted piety and unquenchable zeal, and so greatly esteemed that he was obliged time and time again to decline invitations to the pastoral care of churches in Boston and New York city.” – Allibone. He is known to this day as “Praying Payson of Portland, Maine.”
