The well-deserved reputation of 'Old Princeton Seminary for wedding learning with vital piety' was due largely to the godly life, teaching, and influence of its first principal and professor, Archibald Alexander. Widely acknowledged as a 'first-class theologian, mentor, and minister of the gospel', Alexander's instruction in pastoral theology shaped a whole generation of students.
